FAQ

I.What is the Warp / Weft distinction?

  1. WARP vertical cotton (1%) threads stretched across an upwards foundational frame.
  2. WEFT bespoke luxury yarns 99% that contribute durability, luxury, softness and shine.

II.What are the differentiating factors that you should care about when investing in a handmade rug?

The value of the rug is determined by the number of knots. The more the number of knots, the higher will be the time taken to curate the carpet, in turn increasing the value of the rug.  Rugs knotted on a Persian loom are individually tied and knotted: lined by line TIED and KNOTTED, with the pile cumulatively created inch by inch.

III.Why are knotted rugs costlier?

We say costlier - not more expensive. Why?: Hand-knotted rugs are artfully woven and hand -tied to last for generations and should be created to hold, if not increase, in value given their rarified skillset. Heirlooms. Unlike many alternatives, hand-knotted rugs can be cleaned professionally, with confidence. Each piece reflects master artisanship, conservation of culture and environment.

IV.What sets hand-knotted rugs apart?

Hand-knotted rugs are more than just floor coverings or wall hangings—they are art. Dating back over 2,500 years, a mélange of natural and human processes, steeped in tradition and story. A sustainable, slowly evolving, human artform.

V.Reasons to believe in Lavor Ombra

Unlike many, we do not ask that you judge a rug by knot count alone or perceivably luxurious yarns. We explain every decision behind every rug – from precise weaving technique to yarn origin AND attributes of sustainability – so you understand what you're investing in. This is the foundation of our belief in Radical Transparency®

VI.What is the difference between a Persian knot and a Tibet knot ?

Rugs knotted on a Tibet loom are created by looping yarn around a temporary rod placed ahead of the warp. The yarn is looped around the rod, then cut with a razor to create the pile. The Tibet loom is an accelerated mode to “knot “ a rug.

VII.Hand-Knotted vs. Machine-made Rugs

Machine made rugs are produced rapidly with automated looms. Affordable but lack the artistry and lifespan of hand-knotted rugs.

VIII.Hand-Knotted vs. HAND-WOVEN (FLATWEAVE & HANDLOOM) RUGS

Created without knots using warp and weft threads.  Hand-knotted is not handloom. Faster, cheaper and lightweight. Textural or less detailed than hand-knotted rugs. Affordable but lack the artistry and lifespan of hand-knotted rugs.

IX.Hand-Knotted vs. Hand-Tufted

Hand-tufted rugs are made with a tufting gun, not knotted on a loom. Faster and cheaper than hand-knotting. Prone to shedding. Made to last 10 years max.

X.HAND-KNOTTED TIBET LOOM RUGS

Created with a rod-assisting and accelerating the looping of the knot, rather than a knot per se. “Hand-knotted“ – looping in an accelerated technique with a bar -and then razor cut to create pile.

XI.HAND-KNOTTED PERSIAN LOOM RUGS

The peak of artisanship with literally thousands of hand-tied knots, KNOT-BY-KNOT. CUT-BY-CUT to create pile. Once knotted, the rug undergoes shearing, washing, drying, stretching, clipping, and binding, quality control – passing through multiple hands of artisan finishing. Woven to last for generations. Lavor Ombra consciously chosen to realize it's rugs using Persian looms in Badohi India.
