ALBERO
I am inspired by the organic mosaics in the Capella Palatina in Palermo. Their architecture intrigues me, continually offering inspiration. The Normann kings commissioned artisans from coastal cities. Despite their age, these designs feel contemporary, embodying “-co existence” and tolerance. They show that beauty can thrive in a multicultural world, transcending religion and culture for over a thousand years.

PITAGORA
Like the Papiri design, my work embodies a sense of “intertextuality” with mythology. The Pitagora design, my first carpet, marked the beginning of my artistic journey, possibly inspired by Pythagoras. My Sicilian Odyssey unfolds in a Mediterranean world rich with mythical references. Interestingly, Pythagoras’ “resonance” ties to Hindu practice.

DOMUS
Inspired by Arab/Norman architecture, its fusion of domed “cupola” roofs on churches and palaces, such as Giovanni degli Eremiti, represents a monastic and exotic style simultaneously. It stands as a symbol of ancient Palermo, immersed in a medieval garden and fronted by its iconic palm trees.

ABBEY
Inspired by Arab-Norman architecture, I reconstructed this design from faint etchings in the athedral of Monreale’s Benedictine garden cloisters. While most admire the mosaics and Romanesque columns, I was drawn to the austere chiaroscuro patterns of the Arab-Norman arches. These Norman relics date to around 1200 AD and represent a heritage of humanity.

CRETO
Fractured lines tell my grandparents’ stories of Sicilian town destruction. The Cretto, based on a medieval map of Gibellina-my father’s family origin-is a modern artwork by Alberto Burri. Gibellina was destroyed in the 1968 Belice earthquake; the Great Crack represents the dis- placement from relocated towns. The Cretto showcases sculptural streetscapes shaped by Mount Etna and Stromboli, two of the world’s most active volcanoes. To me, Cretto symbolizes displacement and immigration to new worlds.

PAPIRI
Papiri captures a mythical freshwater pond with its “papyrus plants.” Legend says they were introduced from the Nile around 1000 AD. The Fountain of Arethusa (Italian: Fonte Aretusa, Ancient Greek: Apédouoa) is a natural spring on Ortygia, the historical centre of Syracuse in Sicily. According to Greek mythology, this fountain is where the nymph Arethusa, the patron figure of ancient Syracuse, resurfaced after escaping the underworld. I am drawn to the extremes of chiaroscuro – light and dark – a paradigm central to many mythical and religious ideologies.

VICCOLI
Captures a sense of crossroads and bewildering streets. The vicoli of Phoenic-Greek, Roman, Arab/Normann, and Medieval-were built for horses or later, drawn carriages. Palermo is like an “onion” with layers of cultures. Its multilayered story is evident in its vicoli. Now, these streets resonate with vesper scooters. Vicoli meet piazzas; “largo” describes where streets open into markets, also meaning to “make way.” Vicoli embody losing oneself in unfamiliar surroundings.

PIZZO
Inspired by a fragment of Sicilian embroidery, the Sicilian sfilato style is an embroidery technique applied to high-quality linen cloth using fine thread, whose beauty reflects the centuries-old history of its land of origin. This art form demands time, patience, and a strong female community-attributes that skilled craftswomen have always cherished.

GIUSTA
This design draws from fading Baroque stucco, Majorca ceramics, and marble inlays in noble palazzi and churches. Sicilian Baroque is notable for its chaotic grandeur and decadence. I have recognized the significance of “patina “ and aging with elegance despite experiencing invasion, turmoil, and calamity. Palermo was the center of the Sicilian Nobility (the United Kingdom of Naples and Sicily until the early 19th century).

SANSKRIT
I felt that combining Sanskrit with Roman letters for “Lavor Ombra” was essential. This blend rep- resents my aesthetic and process, showcasing my origins and future direction. The idea developed further with Sanskrit as a motif in signature designs. Chhaya, or Chhāyã (Sanskrit: 514T, meaning ‘shadow’ or’shade’), is also known as Savarna. She represents the Hindu goddess of shadow and is a consort of Surya, the sun god, embodying the shadow of Saranyu (Sanjna), Surya’s first wife. Chhaya emerged from Sanjna’s shadow and substituted for her when Sanjna left temporarily. She is recog- nized as the mother of Shani, the planet Saturn, symbolizing karma and justice.

CHEVRON
The chevron pattern has been a decorative staple for me since its earliest traces in 1800 BC on Minoan pottery from Knossos, Crete. The link between classical architecture and Greek mythology resonates in Sicily (Sicilian Trinacria means “three pointed,” symbolizing the island’s corners). The pattern evolved from Greek origins to signify personal identity and family lineage in Medieval heraldry and military rank.

SERPE
The Latin term for snake resemblance is “Serpens.” This design reflects appreciation for python skin and its spiritual significance. In Hinduism, the python represents Shiva, depicted with a snake around his neck, symbolizing control over primal energy and the life-death cycle. Shedding python skin metaphorically represents spiritual transformation. In yoga, the coiled energy at the spine’s base, known as Kundalini, is depicted as a serpent, symbolizing the potential for spiritual awakening.
